Bolt Sleeper vs. Tornado

Bolt is in the process of repairing a 2015 Freightliner M2-112 after it was involved in a storm where a tornado picked it up and set it on top of a car on the highway Dec. 23, 2015 in Holly Springs, Miss.

The team drivers, Brian and Jennifer Perkins, of Medlin Expedited & Leasing, LLC, were headed home for Christmas when they encountered the storm that developed massive tornados that devastated the area. As they realized the severity of the storm, and traffic stopped, they evacuated their truck in order to help the family in the car on their passenger side. Taking protection in a ditch, the tornado lifted their truck and laid it down on the passenger side, on top of the family’s car. Fortunately, the team had only minor injuries. “A storm of this magnitude would normally tear apart a sleeper of less structural integrity,” said Brian Callan, president of Bolt Custom Trucks. “Our sleepers are constructed from interlocking aluminum cabinets which are then huck bolted to the exterior aluminum shell. This allows the sleeper components to partially crush and absorb impact without breaking apart. This is similar to what is exhibited with a successful car crash simulation. Sleepers constructed from fiberglass and wood in this type of collision would certainly have resulted in significantly more damage and potentially flying debris that could have injured the people nearby. We are proud to produce a product that is unmatched in terms of safety and durability.”

“I’m so glad the team was safe and that my drivers are the type of people that reacted in the safety of others,” said Susan Medlin, owner of Medlin Expedited & Leasing. “We can fix trucks.”

This particular truck was a show truck on display at the Expedite Expo last July in Wilmington, OH, and won the People’s Choice award.
